In addition, the use of newer ocular findings in patients with XLAS in our study is significant for the following reasons. (1) It may help differentiate mild from severe cases with the same genetic mutation. (2) This is the first study that implements new ophthalmologic tools, FLIO in conjunction with OCT, in XLAS syndrome to systematically assess if the macular findings correlate with and/or predict renal failure risk.

Novel Antibodies in Membranous Nephropathy. The current study aims to screen MN patient serum samples for reactivity with potential antigens in protein extracts of normal human glomeruli by WB, purify potential MN antibodies and profile for reactivity with customized protein/peptide array, and validate these potential biomarkers by LCM-MS analysis to test our hypothesis; autoimmune profiling using whole proteome peptide array can identify novel MN antibodies against membrane-enriched glomerular antigens detected by LCM-MS 2018 - 2019 Principal Investigator Utah CCTS Pilot Award Al-Rabadi (PI) 10/01/2018 - 11/30/2019 NCATS KL2TR002538 Assessing Autosomal Recessive Alport by DNA variants and Novel Ophthalmic Approaches. Our goal is to apply the methods and data from this pilot study on a larger scale to identify potential modifying genes and pathogenic pathways that may help describe clinical variability in phenotype expression. We anticipate some of these functional modifiers may play similar roles as predisposing factors for renal impairment in the general population as well. Identifying such factors could pave the way for new therapeutic approaches. In addition, the use of newer ocular findings in patients with ARAS in our study is significant for the following reasons. (1) It may help differentiate ARAS from TBMN beyond genetic testing, given that the mutation involves the same gene. (2) This is the first study that implements new ophthalmologic tools, fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO) in conjunction with optical coherence tomography (OCT), in ARAS syndrome to systematically assess if the macular findings correlate with and/or predict renal failure risk. Our results may also help guide our evaluation of family members who are potential donors and possibly change the current policy of determining eligibility

2016 - 2017 Teaching and Learning Portfolio Award 2016 and 2017 I successfully competed for funds from our medical school to purchase a handheld ultrasound machine for the assessment of body fluid volume by assessing the inferior vena cava. I have been working closely with my nephrologist colleagues and Emergency Medicine physicians at the University of Utah on incorporating this POCUS into our medical school curriculum by conducting several workshops. We also incorporated POCUS into the training of our fellows, students and residents during clinical rounds
